Pearces Road Rally (20/6/09) Report

June 21, 2009

On yet another cold day Bendigo University members congregated to Pearces Road in Mandurang for the running of the Pearces Road Rally sealed handicap. A field of 41 runners lined up for the tough 7.5km course.
First across the line and fastest was Andy Buchanan continuing his great form, stopping the clock in 26.09. Next across the line, in just his second club run for the season was last months Williamstown Marathon champion, Pat Kenny with a time of 27.06 and rounding out the top three was the in-form Michael Bieleny in 27.46. In the sealed handicap section it was Jill Kane who took minutes off her handicap to take the honours from Lucy Ruck and John Jackel.

In a race that showcased some of the clubs up-and-coming talent, a smaller than usual field braved the conditions for the intermediate 3.6km course. Jake Russell finished first and fastest in a time of 14.52. Maddy Evely had another solid race to finish second in 15.10 and the young Bailey Evans third, running a time of 17.14. Meg Pearce had a win ahead of Laura Terry and Maddy Evely in the sealed handicap section.

The 1km course saw a great showdown at the front between Will Hogan and Bailey Evans. Both boys ran neck-and-neck the whole way and Hogan just managing to find a little bit more in the closing stages to finish one second clear of Evans in a close finish. Dane Heiden came home in third place, running a time of 4.05. The sealed handicap section saw Oscar Pearce record his second 1st placing in consecutive weeks, finishing ahead of Harry Jackel and Harry Wright.

There will be no club run for the next two weeks, with the next one being the Kangaroo Flat Falter on July 11. The run will start just off Collins Street in Kangaroo Flat. Check the website for details. Distances run will be 1km, 3km and 8.2km.

The South Bendigo Invitation will be taking place next Saturday at Woodvale Reserve, which is out past Eaglehawk. The 6.5km and 3.2km races will kick off at 2.00pm with the junior races to follow.
