Doering takes out classic
Jack Doering has taken out the opening race of the 2009 Bendigo University Athletics Club’s Cross Country season, The College Classic, in style. On a perfect day for running Doering crossed the line in 28.21 ahead of Jody Pickering and John Jackel. Shane Freer powered around the course in 17.02 to be fastest for the day and was only 16 seconds off Tim McCullagh’s course record of 16.43 set in 2008. Lisa Wilkinson broke the female course record by running a great time of 21.33 to shave 11 seconds off the previous record.
In the 2km race, Matthew Wilkinson started the season in fine style with his victory ahead of Ruby Walsh and Emma Douglas. Running his first race with the club, Jake Russell was fastest in 7.54.
Tom Coleman ran strongly to earn a victory in the 1km dash to edge out Ava Perez and Noah Walsh. Kyle Gellatly had a great run to record the fastest time in the race, running a solid 4.12.
Two of the clubs young guns, Andy Buchanan and Tim McCullagh represented the Bendigo Region Mens Division 1 team on Saturday at the Athletics Victoria Relays at Jells Park in Melbourne. Andy ran a slick 20.00 for 6km while Tim went around the course in 20.37. Bendigo placed 9th in the Mens Division 1 event.
Next weeks event, The Apollo Hill Attack, will feature a 7.1km course and also 1km and 3km events. To get there: Travel out Simpson’s Rd from Eaglehawk and then cross Neilborough Rd, drive about 800m through the junction to make it to the start.
