Guy's Hill Heartbreak Report 23/5/09

May 24, 2009

A windy Saturday afternoon saw runners converge out to Strathfieldsaye for the Guy’s Hill Heartbreak in Race 4 in Bendigo University’s cross country season. As usual, the course provided a great challenge to the competitors in the 6.6km event. It was not an easy start with several steep climbs within the first 2km of the race.

It was a day for the Meharry family with Leeza running a great race to take out the 6.6km event in a time of 32.56 while son Tom powered around the 1km circuit to win in 4.44. Mick McCarthy ran well around the tough 6.6km course to place 2nd for the second time this season while Ben McDermid continued his strong form in 2009 to record a 3rd placing in 28.34. Andy Buchanan gave the field a large head start and charged around the hills to place 7th and record fastest time for the day in 23.35. Madeline Theobald went around the 1km event in a quick 3.38 to finish ahead of Sam Rose who ran a nice race to finish in 3.39. Young Bailey Evans followed on from his win in the 2km at last week’s BU Invitation to finish fastest for the 1km course in 3.16.

Next Saturday will be the running of the Gary Crouch-marked Diamond Hill Dash. The day will include 1km, 3km and 6km events and will see runners complete a loop which takes in the Spring Gully and Deborah Triangle areas and finishes with a nice downhill through the Diamond Hill National Park. To get there: travel out Spring Gully Road and turn into Lawson Street, follow the Street until Faugh-A-Ballagh Road where the start and finish will be.
